Pregnancy brings about profound changes in a woman’s body, and amidst the well-known symptoms like morning sickness and fatigue, there exists a lesser-known condition known as pregnancy rhinitis. This discomforting issue can disrupt daily life, but understanding its nature is key to effective management.

What is Pregnancy Rhinitis?

Woman blows nose

Pregnancy rhinitis refers to inflammation and swelling of the nasal passages during pregnancy, leading to congestion, runny nose and sneezing. Unlike typical allergic rhinitis, this condition isn’t triggered by allergens but is thought to stem from hormonal changes, particularly those related to placental growth hormones. It’s most prevalent during the second and third trimesters, affecting approximately one-fifth of all pregnancies.

Symptoms of Pregnancy Rhinitis

Symptoms mirror those of allergic rhinitis and may include:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Postnasal drip
  • Itchy eyes

These symptoms can be especially troublesome at night, disrupting sleep and causing fatigue.

Managing Pregnancy Rhinitis

While pregnancy rhinitis can be uncomfortable, several strategies can help alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life:

  • Saline nasal sprays: These sprays moisturize nasal passages and reduce congestion without the side effects of medicated options.
  • Humidifiers: Adding moisture to bedroom air with a humidifier can soothe dry nasal passages and ease congestion.
  • Elevating the head: Sleeping with the head elevated can reduce nasal congestion and improve breathing. Using extra pillows or an adjustable bed can be beneficial.
  • Staying hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids thins mucus secretions, keeping nasal passages clear.
  • Exercise: Gentle exercise can improve circulation and provide temporary relief from nasal congestion. Always consult a doctor before starting any new exercise routine during pregnancy.

Consult your doctor before using any new medications.

While pregnancy rhinitis typically isn’t harmful, it’s important to differentiate it from conditions requiring medical attention. If you experience severe congestion, facial pain, green or yellow nasal discharge or symptoms affecting sleep or daily activities, consult your doctor. They can rule out other causes, such as sinus infections, colds or allergies and suggest appropriate treatments. If you develop a fever over 101 degrees, contact your doctor promptly, as fevers can be harmful during pregnancy.
