Tympanostomy tubes, more commonly known as ear tubes, are small tubes inserted into the eardrum. These tubes help equalize the pressure within the middle ear and prevent fluid from building up, a common cause of ear infections. Ear tubes are especially beneficial for children with Eustachian tubes that are prone to swelling or too small to drain fluid from the ear to the back throat. By clearing this trapped fluid, it can relieve pressure on the eardrum, offering relief.

Considerations for Ear Tubes

The procedure for inserting hearing tubes typically takes less than half an hour. The procedure, called myringotomy, is performed by our highly skilled ENT specialists under general anesthesia, ensuring your child’s safety and comfort.

The Ear Tube Procedure

1. Anesthesia: The first step is to place your child under general anesthesia.
2. Creating an Opening: Next, a small incision is made in the eardrum.
3. Fluid Removal: Once the incision has been made, any fluid can drain or be suctioned out.
4. Inserting the Tubes: Once the fluid has been cleared, the tubes are placed into the incision, allowing airflow and drainage from the middle ear.
