Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that targets the excess skin around the upper, lower, or both upper and lower eyelids. By removing the extra skin, and fatty deposits, this procedure may improve peripheral vision, and lower eyelid surgery may eliminate bags and dark circles under the eyelids. The result is a more alert, youthful appearance and improved field of vision for those suffering from droopy eyelids.
Benefits of Surgery:
- Reduces the signs of aging, such as wrinkles, sagging skin, and puffiness around the eyes.
- Corrects droopy eyelids that may obstruct or impair the field of vision.
- Can help boost patient confidence by refreshing their look through surgery.
Ideal candidates for blepharoplasty are typically non-smoking adults over the age of 35 who are generally healthy and have realistic expectations about surgical outcomes.
Eyelid surgery may involve the upper or lower eyelids, or both, and it is a procedure that can be completed within about two hours. Blepharoplasty typically follows the same steps:
- Local anesthesia is administered to the eyelid area, and sedation is offered to improve your comfort during the procedure.
- Small incisions are made along the natural folds of the upper eyelids to reduce scarring. Our surgeon then removes excess skin, fat, and muscle to correct any puffiness or sagging. Fine sutures close the incision.
- For the lower eyelids, an incision is made just below the eyelashes, allowing access to remove or reposition fat and to correct sagging and wrinkles. In some cases, lasers may be used to resurface the skin, further improving its texture and appearance.
Recovery from eyelid surgery is generally straightforward, but following post-operative care instructions can help ensure optimal healing and results.
Post-Surgery Tips for Recovery:
- Swelling and Bruising: Mild swelling and bruising around the eyes are normal and can last for one to two weeks. Applying cold compresses and keeping your head elevated helps reduce swelling.
- Blurry Vision and Light Sensitivity: Temporary blurriness of vision and sensitivity to light are to be expected following surgery. Wearing sunglasses can help protect your eyes and reduce incoming light to improve comfort.
- Avoiding Strain: Avoiding strenuous activities like heavy lifting or bending during the first few weeks after recovery can help improve recovery. Light activities and gentle walking can also help.
Most patients are able to return to work and resume normal activities within 10 to 14 days of surgery, but this can be longer or shorter depending on your individual healing process and your work environment.
Eyelid surgery is a fairly common and safe procedure, but it’s important to be aware of the potential risks and complications that can arise.
Possible Complications Can Include:
- Infection
- Hematoma, or accumulation of blood under the skin
- Scarring
- Eyelid function issues
- Vision changes
Discussing these risks and your concerns with our specialists can help ensure a successful procedure and minimize any complications.
Blepharoplasty can offer patients long-lasting results, but there are ways to maximize your results and slow the effects of aging. Wearing sunglasses, applying sunscreen around the eyes, maintaining a healthy lifestyle of exercise and good skincare can all help preserve the results of eyelid surgery. Upper eyelid surgery can be repeated in addition to brow lifts to help maintain a youthful appearance.
