• Outer Ear Infections (Otitis Externa): Commonly called “swimmer’s ear,” outer ear infections occur when the ear canal’s skin is scratched or irritated.

• Middle Ear Infections (Otitis Media): The most common type of ear infection is caused by a swelling or blockage of the small tube connecting the ear to the throat. When this part of the ear is swollen, it can trap fluid in the middle ear, leading to infection.

• Inner Ear Infections (Labyrinthitis): The least common type is inner ear infections, which affect the inner ear and impact balance. These infections are typically caused when a respiratory illness spreads to the ear.

The best way to receive timely treatment is to recognize the symptoms early. While symptoms can vary in type and severity, there are some common symptoms most ear infections share.

Common Symptoms of Ear Infections

• Middle Ear Infection: Pain inside the ear, the feeling of “fullness” within the ear, trouble hearing, fever, and fluid drainage.
• Outer Ear Infection: Redness, swelling, rash, and pain in the outer ear.
• Inner Ear Infection: Dizziness, balance problems, and hearing loss.

For babies and children who may be nonverbal or unable to communicate their discomfort, there may be other signs, such as:

• Behavioral Indicators: Increased crying, pulling or tugging at ears, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping, and loss of balance may all be symptoms of infection.

• Hearing Loss: Prolonged infections can damage the structures within the ear, causing temporary or permanent damage and hearing loss.

• Balance Issues: When infections occur within the inner ear, it can disrupt balance.

• Cholesteatoma: Some infections can become non-cancerous cysts that develop right behind the eardrum.
• Mastoiditis: This severe infection of the mastoid bone can destroy bone tissue if left untreated promptly.
