Nasal polyps are benign growths in the sinus and nasal passages area. They’re known for causing symptoms such as loss of smell, congestion and headaches. Often associated with chronic inflammatory conditions, these polyps can recur despite treatment.
Primarily, individuals suffering from chronic rhinosinusitis are at a higher risk of developing nasal polyps. These growths are also associated with several respiratory conditions, such as asthma, chronic sinusitis, cystic fibrosis, allergic rhinitis and aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease, as well as some immunodeficiency or autoimmune disorders.
Symptoms of Nasal Polyps
Congestion is the most frequent symptom, often severe and unresponsive to allergy treatments. You may notice your allergy symptoms are worse than usual after a walk through Blue Bell Park, but symptoms caused by nasal polyps are typically more persistent. Additional symptoms may include:
- A reduced or absent sense of smell or taste
- Postnasal drip
- Headaches, facial discomfort or pain in the sinuses
- A nasal discharge of clear mucus
While small nasal polyps might not trigger any symptoms, larger ones can obstruct the nasal pathways and might lead to sinus infections.
Treatment Approaches
Healthcare providers may identify nasal polyps through a physical inspection, CT scan or nasal endoscopy. In diagnosed cases, they may suggest various treatments, from medications to surgical interventions, especially for severe conditions where medications fail to alleviate symptoms or when large polyps result in repeated sinus infections.
Potential treatments involve:
- Nasal corticosteroid sprays or drops
- Systemic corticosteroids
- Antileukotriene agents, for example, Singulair
- Immunotherapy
- Nasal washes
- Antibiotics
It’s important to note this is not a comprehensive listing of all possible treatments. An Ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor will tailor the treatment plan following an extensive evaluation and review of the patient’s medical history.
