In October 2024, the Food and Drug Administration approved nine at-home combination tests that can detect the coronavirus and influenza from a single sample.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the New Tests\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Made by health care equipment company Healgen\u00ae, the combination tests check for COVID as well as two common flu viruses, influenza A and influenza B, and are available over the counter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like at-home COVID tests, the combination tests are simple to use\u2014swab the inside of your nostril, immerse it in a solution and apply a few droplets of the mixture onto a test strip\u2014and fast, delivering results in 15 minutes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re also just as effective as COVID tests, which detect the virus about 80% of the time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the combination tests do have drawbacks\u2014they\u2019re slightly more expensive than a COVID-only test and may not be covered by insurance.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preventing Illnesses with Vaccines\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to ensure you don\u2019t get COVID or the flu is to get vaccinated. Here are the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s vaccine recommendations:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID Vaccine&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2024\u20132025\u202fCOVID vaccine is recommended for everyone ages six months and older, including those who have had a COVID vaccine previously and those who have had COVID.<sup>1<\/sup>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Certain people may need more than one dose of the vaccine.<sup>1,2<\/sup>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Some children six months to four years old and all individuals 65 and older <\/strong>should receive two doses.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Those who are moderately to severely immunocompromised <\/strong>should receive at least two doses and may receive three or more, depending on their health care provider\u2019s recommendation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Flu Vaccine&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All individuals ages six months or older should get a flu vaccine.<sup>3<\/sup>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re experiencing troublesome respiratory symptoms that aren\u2019t COVID- or flu-related, consider <a href=\"https:\/\/pentadocs.com\/request-appointment\/\">booking a consultation<\/a> with one of our ENT physicians to get to the root cause of your issues.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1 CDC.
