However, several causes require medical treatment to prevent more severe outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visit your doctor if you experience any of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A severe or persistent sore throat that lasts longer than a week<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty breathing or swallowing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A high fever<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Swelling in the face or neck<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hoarseness that has gone on for over two weeks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blood in saliva or mucus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A lump in the neck<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At your appointment, your doctor will examine your throat and likely perform a throat swab for bacteria. Additional testing may be required depending on your accompanying symptoms.
