Tonsillectomies are mostly performed on children, though sometimes adults require the procedure as well. Below we review the signs you need your tonsils out, how to prepare for a tonsillectomy, how a tonsillectomy is performed and how to recover from a tonsillectomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Signs You Need Your Tonsils Removed<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"ice-cream-tonsils\" src=\"https:\/\/pentadocs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/ice-cream-tonsils-768x960.jpg\" alt=\"A scoop of chocolate ice cream on a waffle cone.\" width=\"768\" height=\"960\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-30457 alignright\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pentadocs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/ice-cream-tonsils-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pentadocs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/ice-cream-tonsils-1229x1536.jpg 1229w, https:\/\/pentadocs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/ice-cream-tonsils-256x320.jpg 256w, https:\/\/pentadocs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/ice-cream-tonsils.jpg 1364w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you experience the following, your doctor may recommend a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/tonsillectomy\/about\/pac-20395141\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">tonsillectomy<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You experience chronic tonsillitis, which is inflammation\/infection of the tonsils.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your chronic tonsillitis isn\u2019t managed with antibiotics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have enlarged tonsils, which can lead to obstructive sleep apnea or trouble swallowing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your tonsils have abnormal growths on them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preparing for a Tonsillectomy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before surgery, you\u2019ll have a consultation appointment with your doctor. During this appointment, they\u2019ll ask you about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your prescription and over-the-counter medications and supplements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your allergies or history of reactions to medications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your personal and family history of problems with anesthesia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your personal and family history of bleeding problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some medications and supplements you\u2019ll need to stop taking for at least two weeks before surgery, including aspirin, ginkgo biloba and St. John\u2019s wort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also need to avoid eating or drinking anything after midnight the night of your surgery. The exception to this is you can take a small sip of water to wash down any approved medications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How a Tonsillectomy Is Performed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tonsillectomies take about 30 minutes to an hour to perform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before beginning surgery, your doctor will put you under general anesthesia so that you\u2019re asleep and pain-free. Then they\u2019ll use a scalpel or a tool that uses heat, ultrasound, laser or cold temperatures to remove the tonsils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the procedure is over, your health care team will monitor your vitals as you wake up from anesthesia.
