And kids can make the likelihood of damage much greater because they often hold toys closer to their ears due to their short arm span, or they may hold toys too close to their caregivers\u2019 ears. According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, a child who does this can make a 90dB sound grow to be as loud as 120dB\u2014that\u2019s as loud as a jet plane taking off\u2014and can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asha.org\/public\/hearing\/noisy-toys\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">cause permanent hearing loss<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some regulations are in place to protect kids against too-loud toys. The American Society for Testing and Materials states that a handheld, tabletop or crib toy cannot exceed 90dB at any position 10 inches away from the toy\u2019s surface; however, manufacturers\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearingreview.com\/practice-building\/marketing\/noisy-toys-annoying-or-harmful\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">compliance with this requirement is voluntary<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which Toys Could Harm Hearing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Center for Hearing and Communication, the following toy types could result in hearing loss because they create sounds over 90dB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Certain rattles and squeaky toys<\/strong> can emit 110 dBA sounds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Musical toys<\/strong>, such as electric guitars, drums and horns, may produce sounds as loud as 120 dBA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Toy phones<\/strong> for small children can clock in at between 123 and 129 dBA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Toys designed to amplify the voice<\/strong> have been measured at 135 dBA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Toys producing firearm sounds<\/strong> emit volumes as loud as 150 dBA <a href=\"https:\/\/noiseawareness.org\/info-center\/noisy-toys\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">one foot away from the noise source<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Household toys, like vacuum cleaners, talking dolls, walkie-talkies and others can also contribute to noise-induced hearing loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking for specific toys you may want to use with caution? Here are the Sight &amp; Hearing Association\u2019s top five noisiest toys for 2021 and their corresponding decibel level when measured at zero inches from the toy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Disney Moana Squeeze and Scream HeiHei (109.7 dB)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DJ Mix &amp; Spin Studio from Hape (107.8 dB)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Outdoor Discovery\u2122 Hoot n\u2019 Holler Animal Caller from Toysmith (104.5 dB)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4-in-1 Ultimate Learning Bot from Fisher-Price (103.6 dB)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Baby Einstein Neptune\u2019s Friends Play-a-Sound Book from Vtech (98.4 dB)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also find the entire list of 2021\u2019s noisiest toys <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sightandhearing.org\/Portals\/19\/Noisy%20Toys%20List%202021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">on their website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Take Steps to Protect Ears of All Sizes <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Santa Claus may be coming to town soon, but you can make sure his sleigh isn\u2019t full of noisy toys (or make them less loud if they are).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Try before you buy<\/strong>: If the toy sounds too loud, it probably is. Don\u2019t purchase it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Muffle the sound<\/strong>: Placing duct tape over the speakers will help.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bye-bye batteries<\/strong>: Remove batteries from toys that emit too much noise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Get rid of the toy<\/strong>: Your loved ones\u2019 ears will thank you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also give the children in your life quieter options for playtime.
